BMW plans to roll out plug-in hybrid versions of all BMW models in the long term. The premium car maker is unveiling a plug-in hybrid 3 Series prototype as well as a range of other concepts that use technology that’s already in place in its i-brand vehicles.

“All BMW Group models benefit from BMW i,” BMW R&D chief Herbert Diess said in a press release. “The fundamental technology involved in battery cells, electric motors and the power electronics will be used in our upcoming plug-in hybrid models.”

The prototypes and concepts shown now combine four-cylinder turbo-charged internal combustion engines with electric motors that are powered by externally rechargeable batteries. The cars can travel short distances using only electric power.

For the electric side of the powertrain, BMW uses its eDrive technology, which it has already deployed in the i3 and i8 models.

BMW expects sustainable mobility to come in various shapes and sizes. Therefore, it said, its plug-in hybrid technology can be integrated in a wide variety of vehicle concepts.
